Being a bridesmaid – especially the maid-of-honor – isn’t all fun and games. As part of the wedding party and attendant to the bride, it is your responsibility to make sure things are running smoothly and the bride’s needs are taken care of.

While most brides wouldn’t expect their bridesmaids to do anything too crazy, one amazing maid-of-honor proved she will stop at nothing to make sure the big day goes off without a hitch.

Hannah West and Mark Jefferies had just completed their beautiful ceremony at Dumbleton Hall in England and photographer Rosie Hardy was shooting formal portraits of them with their wedding party when she noticed something horrifying happening in the lake behind the group – a black swan had snatched a gosling away from its parents and was trying to drown it.

“Since I was facing the lake, I managed to see the whole thing go down,” Rosie said. “At first there was horrendous squawking from the parent geese, followed by lots of splashing.”

She tried to stay professional, but she also knew she couldn’t just stand by and watch the poor little bird die. “There was no way I was going to be able to keep taking the photos and pretend it wasn’t happening!” she said.

She needn’t have worried, though – there was an animal hero in the wedding party! Before Rosie even knew what was happening, the bride’s sister, Faye West, kicked off her heels and ran into the lake.

“I had shouted ‘Can someone do something!?’” Rosie recalled. “I assumed maybe one of the guests would get a stick and scare it before it was too late. But by the time I had looked around to see if anyone was close enough to help, Faye was pretty much already in the lake.”
